The Busoni Estate at the Berlin State Library
The Busoni estate is one of the most extensive collections in the Music Department of the Berlin State Library (Mus. Nachl. F. Busoni) and documents not only Busoni’s life and work, but also the musical and contemporary history of Berlin at the beginning of the 20th century. In addition to musical manuscripts, programmes, arrangements of other composers’ works (Bach, Liszt) and poetry, the Busoni estate comprises the Liszt collection and the collection of pictures and portraits, whilst the extensive correspondence presents the cosmopolitan Busoni during the transition from the 19th to the 20th century.

From 4 September 2016 to 8 January 2017, the Berlin State Library, the State Institute for Music Research and the Art Library of the State Museums organised an exhibition to mark the 150th anniversary of Busoni’s birth. It tells the story of a great musician and Busoni’s role as a “universalist” observer and commentator on the cultural life of his time. The catalogue accompanies the exhibition with 12 essays on key aspects of his work.
